Wenshu Monastery is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu

Chengdu is a refreshingly laid-back city, compared to much of fast-paced, booming China. The locals are known for their welcoming ways; just ask and they’ll point you in the direction of holy sites like Wenshu Yuan Monastery – an ancient temple dedicated to Buddhist gods – or Jinsha Museum, where you can find the sprawling remains of a settlement dating from 2700 BC.

But Sichuan’s most famous residents can be found on Chengdu’s outskirts, at the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Here, these rare bears sleep, feed and breed in a world of clumping bamboo, flowers and man-made dens. Arrive early to catch them munching on bamboo, rolling around and climbing trees.

Chengdu’s famously fiery street food is another major draw. Sink your teeth into a plump, curried beef pastry, or try the extra spicy Sichuan hot pot, which comes loaded with chilis, lotus root, tofu skin and various meats.

Spring is the best time to visit Chengdu, with minimal rainfall and temperatures averaging around 24°C. This is also the ‘falling in love’ period for Giant Pandas, so if you visit in autumn or winter you may see some tiny newborns at the Research Base. Avoid the first weeks of May and October, as these are China’s busiest holiday periods.
