Potala Palace is an iconic building of Tibet and also one of the most popular tourist attraction in China. Potala Palace was awarded as one of the site that listed in the World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage by UNESCO in 1994.

Potala Palace called as the ‘Pearl on the Roof of the World’ and this also the biggest building in Tibet. The place located on the red hill, the city of Lhasa. The building located more than 3,700 meters above sea level, making it as the highest ancient palace in the world. The building lenght is 400 meters and width 350 meters, the height is 110 meters consists of 13 levels. The palace has over 1000 rooms, 10000 shrines and 200,000 statues. Wall of the castle made of granite rocks, thickest one reaches five meters.

Potala was built during the dynasti of Songtsän Gambo (7th century AD). From that moment the Potala Palace became the center of politics and religion. Since the seventh century, this building has been a winter palace for the Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama is a Buddhist religious leader in Tibet. Potala palace consists of two parts, namely Potrang Karpo or White Palace and Potrang Marpo or Red Palace. White palace in the eastern part is used as the residence of the Dalai Lama.

Today Potala Palace serves as a museum. All the palace rooms, hall, corridor and porch decorated with frescoes in various themes, ranging from the story of characters, historical moments, the story of the book of Buddhism, sports and recreation. Moreover, in the Potala Palace there are many paintings, stone and wood carvings, statues, Tibetan rugs, ceramics, jade and a large number of traditional craft objects from the 17th century.
